Hi,
J-1 is an exchange visitor visa. its issued for obtaining skills in US which a candidate cant get from his home country (cousulate lingo, lol). for us, after finishing residency we have to return to home country for 2 yrs. cant enter US for that period under any visa. If dont want to go, have to do 3-4 yrs service in a medically underserved area, called j-1 waiver job.
once on J-1, cant change ur visa status, even if u marry a US citizen.
1. Depends upon the prog in which u match. progs either sponsors J-1 or H-1. for progs sponsoring J-1, u will need to apply for J-1. will have to apply thru ECFMG. see ECFMG website for details.
2. approx duration for J-1 is shorter than H-1. takes abut a month.
3. stampin has to be done at a US consulate in ur home country.
4. J-1 is issued for only 1 yr. have to renew it every yr untill required. and that too from US consulate outside US. so ppl go to their home country every yr or visit canda/mexico etc etc to do that. however tedious it may seem, its never a prob.
Good luck.
