Hello Guys,

I have a few concerns regarding J1 visa please help.

1.what happens after I get matched? will I have to apply for the J1 visa?
2. approximate time duration in getting the paper work done and obtaining the visa?
3.where do I have to go for stamping? is it the home country or the country of present residence?
4. How long is the J1 visa issued for?

Please shed some light

Thanks

Preethi

Hi,
J-1 is an exchange visitor visa. its issued for obtaining skills in US which a candidate cant get from his home country (cousulate lingo, lol). for us, after finishing residency we have to return to home country for 2 yrs. cant enter US for that period under any visa. If dont want to go, have to do 3-4 yrs service in a medically underserved area, called j-1 waiver job.
once on J-1, cant change ur visa status, even if u marry a US citizen.

1. Depends upon the prog in which u match. progs either sponsors J-1 or H-1. for progs sponsoring J-1, u will need to apply for J-1. will have to apply thru ECFMG. see ECFMG website for details.
2. approx duration for J-1 is shorter than H-1. takes abut a month.
3. stampin has to be done at a US consulate in ur home country.
4. J-1 is issued for only 1 yr. have to renew it every yr untill required. and that too from US consulate outside US. so ppl go to their home country every yr or visit canda/mexico etc etc to do that. however tedious it may seem, its never a prob.

Good luck.
