hey Dr. D what resources for incoming PGY1 in IM will be very useful?

Reply to This

Hey Deo,
congrats that you matched/prematched (I assumed).
These are the usual study material that would need in PGY1:
1. Uptodate (will be most likely available in your hospital) (also available in PDA)
2. Sanford Infectious disease guide
3. Epocrates PDA software for drugs
4. Pocket Medicine (Massachussetts General Hospital).
5. Washington manual.
You will find these books here in this website

So which program did you match at?

Hi Deo,
Great to hear that you matched in your city itself. I am happy for you.
I use Palm centro. I love Palm for its stability and multiple third party softwares which are available. Most of the medical students and residents in our program use Palm. Regarding Centro, the only problem is that it does not have wifi. So if you decide to go for Palm, then i would suggest Treo rather than Centro.
If you would like to go for Iphone, check whether your hospital electronic medical record software is compatible with iphone. Since Iphone is new, it might not be compatible with some of our pda medical software.
I would not recommend windows mobile PDAs as it might get hanged sometimes. It happened to me and then i switched to Palm.

Hey Deo,
Uptodate and epocrates are the ones which you use regularly every day. If you have net-connected computer everywhere in your hospital, you might not even need the PDA sometimes. However PDA is additional convenience.
In your case, I would not buy a PDA now. Rather I would wait until the need arises (after you start your residency and check for yourself if it is really needed).
